How many types of Akitas are there?
After World War II, the Akita Inu was brought to America by the military on their return home. The traits of loyalty, persistence, and intelligence soon caught the attention of breeders, who began to develop their own breeding line. This led to the establishment of a new variety.
There are currently only 2 types of Akita, the Akita Inu or Japanese Akita, and the American Akita. According to the standards of the FCI ( International Cynological Federation ), Japan, and many other countries, the American Akita is considered a separate breed. In contrast, the United States and Canada consider both the American and the Japanese to belong to the same race.
Akita Inu vs. American Akita: how are they different?
Although they are very similar dogs, there are some differences that help identify whether an Akita is Japanese or American.
Coat color
Only specific colors are allowed in the Akita Inu standard, such as red-fawn, sesame, white, and brindle. In addition, this dog must not show a face mask and the lower part of the body must be cream or white, starting from the chin to the tail. The inside of the legs, the sides of the snout, and the cheeks should also be light in color.
For its part, the American Akita can be any color/pattern, with or without a face mask.
Regardless of type, all Akitas have a double-layered coat: an outer layer of hard straight hair, and a thick, fine undercoat.
Size and weight
Size is another of the most notable differences between the two dogs. The Akita Inu is slightly smaller, reaching 67 cm at the withers (males) and weighing between 31 and 54 kg. The American is usually taller and heavier, reaching a maximum height of 66 to 71 cm and a weight of 31 to 58 kg.
Appearance
The appearance of these Akitas is also not exactly the same. For one thing, the Japanese Akita type has a muscular, but leaner build, with a well-defined crease in the abdominal area. The head is smaller, the ears point further forward, the eyes are hazelnuts, and the facial expression denotes the fox-like appearance typical of Spitzes.
The American Akita type looks more imposing and muscular. Its head is wider, the ears are well erect and the eyes are small, sunken.
Temper
The Akita Inu is an independent dog; hence he sometimes becomes stubborn. He is usually wary of strangers. He’s loyal and protective nature of him can become a problem if he is not socialized early. He is not the most recommended type of Akita to have with small children, tiny pets, or other dogs.
In contrast, the American Akita seems to be a bit more friendly with strangers. While he is still a protective dog, he is often less suspicious of strangers and can relate to them much more quickly. It is known that it can coexist with almost any other breed of dog.
